☆ You have my word (on it).

　「約束するよ！」という意味で You have my word. という表現がよく使われます。「〜について」と何についてかを示す時には前置詞の on が使われます。例を２つあげておきます。

(1) The men and women I work with are the best in the world. They won't rest until I do. You have my word on that.

(2) Now... when I am elected, I will appoint you, I promise. You have my word on that.

　また、(2)の例のように、I promise. という表現で「約束」しているのに、さらに続けて You have my word. という表現を使い、「約束」を強調することもよくあります。同じような例をもう一つあげておきます。

If I have any news, I'll call you. I promise. You have my word.

☆ 方向指示器（ウインカー）

　車の「方向指示器」の事を普通ウインカーと言っていますが、アメリカ英語で普通に使われる表現は turn signal です。例を見ておきましょう。まず、刑事コロンボからです。コロンボが運転しているポンコツ車を交通警官がチェックしようとしている場面です。ヘッドライトをつけて、方向指示器を点滅させ、ボンネットを開けるように指示しています。

Well, it'll only take a couple of moments, Lieutenant. Would you try, uh, your lights and your turn signal, please, and open the hood for me?

次の例はThe Big C からのものですが、母親が子供に運転を教えているところに、父親が口を挟んできたので「あなたは方向指示器を全く使わないでしょう」と言って、自分の方が適任だと述べている場面です。

I'm teaching him how to drive. I just thought we'd get it over with, and I wanted to be the one to teach him. You never use your turn signals.

また、blinker を使う事もあります。例をあげておきます。

Auggie: Make sure you do a head tail-- the van can't know you're following it if you're in front of it. It's a risky maneuver but professional drivers always use their blinkers.

☆ Chug! Chug! Chug!

　日本でも一時流行った一気飲みですが、「一気、一気！」という掛け声を英語では Chug! Chug!と言います。Chug は「一気飲みする」という動詞です。

　初めの例は、モンクの助手のシャローナが、男たちから情報を得ようとしたら、ピッチャー２杯のビールを先に飲み干したら何でも話すと、早飲み競争をしている場面。モンクがピッチャーからコップにビールを注いでいると、シャローナが「ピッチャーをかして」と言って、ピッチャーから直接飲み始めると観衆が「一気、一気！」とはやし立てている。

Sharona: Give it to me. Give it to me!

Audience: Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!

　次の例も、バーで一時的にアルバイトしているクリスティーナが、客にビールの早飲みの競争を促している場面。開始の笛を鳴らし、「一気、一気！」と煽っている。

Cristina: One, two... [blows whistle] Chug, chug, chug! Oh, yeah! Oh, yeah! Who's first?! Oh, groom!

☆ party school

　party school を『オーレックス英和辞典』で調べると、「((米口))パーティばっかりやっているような大学」とあるのですが、この説明を読むと、そんな楽しい大学もあるのかと思う人も出てくるのではないでしょうか。この表現に関しては『ウイズダム英和辞典』の説明の方がわかりやすいです。「((米・くだけて))（学生が勉強しない）三流大学」とあります。

　次の例は、シェパード医師の手術中にコンピュータが故障して手術が続行できなくなったので困っていると、インターンのローズが修理を申し出た場面。ローズがコンピュータ・サイエンスのコースを３学期間取ったと言ったので、シェパードが「どこの大学でだ？」と尋ね、サンタ・クルーズ大だと答えると、シェパードが「あそこは三流大学だろ」とバカにしたので、それにローズが反論しています。

Rose: Dr. Shepherd.

Dr. Shepherd: Yes.

Rose: I did three semesters in computer science before I switched to nursing. I don't know  

      what's wrong, but if it's something reasonably basic, I...

Dr. Shepherd: I'd feel a lot better about this if your voice wasn't shaking.

Rose: My voice shakes when I'm nervous. I'm an imperfect person, but it doesn't mean I 

      can't fix the computer.

Dr. Shepherd: All right, Rose has three semesters of computer science at-- what school did you go to?

Rose: Santa Cruz.

Dr. Shepherd: That's a party school.

Rose: You want to insult my education, or do you want me to try and help you save your 

      patient?

Dr. Shepherd: Who can beat three semesters of computer science at Santa Cruz? 

      Anybody? Okay, give it a shot.
