手の指 その２

手の指の名前について述べたのですが、人差し指、中指、薬指、小指に関しては別の呼び方があります。それは finger に序数を付けて表す方法です。この場合は、下位語のことなので、親指は thumb となり除外されます。第一番目の指は人差し指なので the first finger、その隣の中指は the second finger、次の薬指は the third finger、だから小指は the fourth finger と呼びます。この指の呼び方が一番よく使われるのが、私の趣味であるマジックの手順の説明の文章です。例をあげておきます。

1. The thumb is touching the first finger, but does not aid in holding the silver coin.

１の文章で分かるように、親指を thumb と呼び、人差し指から順に first, second, third, fourth と呼んでいます。でも、日常会話では、前に述べたように index finger(or forefinger), middle finger, ring finger, little finger(or pinky)と呼ぶ事の方が普通のようです。
