携帯充電器

和英辞典を見ると、「充電器」は battery charger と載せられています。しかし、携帯電話の充電器に関しては、phone charger という表現が使われているようです。

(1) A: Anyone seen my, um... Phone charger.

     B: You lost it. Again.

    -- NCIS: Hawaii, S1E3

cell phone charger ということもあるようです。

(2) I took his cell phone charger.

     -- Covert Affairs, S3E3

イギリス英語でも、 phone charger は普通に使われているようです。

That's what you said when you left your phone charger in Henry VIII's en suite.

PJs

 アメリカのテレビドラマを見ていると、気になる表現に出くわすことが多くあります。その一つが、PJs という表現です。例を見てみましょう。

Baby, why are you still in your PJs? You're gonna miss the bus. I don't have time to drive you to school today.

-- Lucifer, S2E15

People have come in after me, they've gotten their food, gone home, eaten.

They're in their PJs, watching a movie.

-- The Good Doctor, S2E17

両方共、in one's PJs という表現が使われています。文脈から類推できるのですが、このPJsというのは pajamas という語を略した形なのです。もう一例あげます。

Look, it's the middle of spring. It's too hot to wear flannel PJs.

この例は wear が使われています。以上の例で分かるように、PJs はくだけた会話で pajamas の代わりによく使われています。

ところが、興味深いことですが、このPJsというのはアメリカ英語ではよく使われるのですが、イギリスのテレビドラマを調べてみても全く使われていないのです。つまり、「PJs というのはpajamas を略した表現で、アメリカ英語のくだけた会話で使われ、イギリス英語では使われない」と結論づけていいように思われます。

Half seven という表現

　イギリス英語の表現で half seven という表現が気になりました。これは７時半ということを表しているのです。イギリス英語の a half past seven から past と不定冠詞の a がとれたものだ。もちろん、７時半だけではなく、「... 時半」という場合には "half ..." という表現が使われます。例をあげておきます。

A: What time did you get there?

B: Half seven.

A: What time is the auction?

B: Half two.

We're not going to do anything till half three?

☆オール秀

学校の成績の「オール５」は straight A と英語では表現する事はよく知られるようになったが、５段階評価ではなく、優・良・可という評価の場合などで「オール秀」という評価の場合は、特に優れているので、英語では A よりも上のA+という評価があるため、これを使い、straight A plus と表現するのがぴったりです。例文をあげておきます。

DANIELS: Michelle Clarke, high school junior. Got straight A-pluses, in tough courses, too. Mom's a stay-at-home, and Dad's an airline pilot.
-- The Closer, Season 4 Episode 3
（ダニエルズ：ミッシェル・クラーク。高校２年。成績は難しい科目でオール秀。母親は専業主婦。父親はパイロットです）

これは、ダニエルズが、殺害された人物であるミッシェル・クラークについて説明している場面ですが、成績が優秀なことを述べる時に、get straight A-pluses と使っています。

☆ person of interest

アメリカのテレビドラマに Person of Interest というのがあります。日本語のタイトルが「パーソン･オブ･インタレスト 犯罪予知ユニット」だったので、Person of Interest の意味を知ろうと英和辞典を調べましたが、ほとんどのものに載せられていませんでした。その時、インターネットで検索して、「容疑者」という意味だと知ったのですが、最近では「容疑者」のことを suspect よりも person of interest の方を使うという事が Sue Grafton の本で書かれていました。

In short order, the writer has to lay out the nature of the crime and introduce two or three viable suspects (or persons of interest as they're referred to these days). -- Sue Grafton,  Kinsey and Me, p.XI

☆ Did you get my text?

　24: The Legacy を見ていてDid you get my text? という表現が気になりました。この text は text message の略で、この表現の意味は「携帯メールを見たか？」です。この表現は頻繁に使用されています。

Amira: All nine of them, yes.

Annie: No. Did you get my text about the embassy in Bogota?

Joan: Yes, I already called it in to Bogota station. They're taking all the necessary precautions.

もちろん、次のようにtext message と使うこともありますが、最近は text と略して使われるのが普通のようです。

☆in front of the plane と in the front of the plane

　in front of the plane は勿論のことながら、in front of が熟語で「飛行機の前に」という意味で、飛行機の機体の外部の前方にという意味を表します。

　ところが、 in the front of the plane となると、the front of … が「…の前部」という意味になり、「飛行機の前部で」という意味になり、飛行機の内部のことを表します。

(2) The flight had been pleasant enough--they were in the front of the plane--but the stewardesses seemed disorganized, the meals coming at odd times. Emily had turned down dinner because Tim was asleep, and she couldn't eat with Sarah sleeping in her lap.

☆ You have my word (on it).

　「約束するよ！」という意味で You have my word. という表現がよく使われます。「〜について」と何についてかを示す時には前置詞の on が使われます。例を２つあげておきます。

(1) The men and women I work with are the best in the world. They won't rest until I do. You have my word on that.

(2) Now... when I am elected, I will appoint you, I promise. You have my word on that.

-- Castle, S3E19

　また、(2)の例のように、I promise. という表現で「約束」しているのに、さらに続けて You have my word. という表現を使い、「約束」を強調することもよくあります。同じような例をもう一つあげておきます。

If I have any news, I'll call you. I promise. You have my word.

☆ 方向指示器（ウインカー）

　車の「方向指示器」の事を普通ウインカーと言っていますが、アメリカ英語で普通に使われる表現は turn signal です。例を見ておきましょう。まず、刑事コロンボからです。コロンボが運転しているポンコツ車を交通警官がチェックしようとしている場面です。ヘッドライトをつけて、方向指示器を点滅させ、ボンネットを開けるように指示しています。

Well, it'll only take a couple of moments, Lieutenant. Would you try, uh, your lights and your turn signal, please, and open the hood for me?

次の例はThe Big C からのものですが、母親が子供に運転を教えているところに、父親が口を挟んできたので「あなたは方向指示器を全く使わないでしょう」と言って、自分の方が適任だと述べている場面です。

I'm teaching him how to drive. I just thought we'd get it over with, and I wanted to be the one to teach him. You never use your turn signals.

また、blinker を使う事もあります。例をあげておきます。

Auggie: Make sure you do a head tail-- the van can't know you're following it if you're in front of it. It's a risky maneuver but professional drivers always use their blinkers.
